CBD Oil for Pets?
Our experience with CBD Oil and our dog Kari.
In December Kari had a MCT (Mast Cell Tumour) removed from her leg, MCT's are common in boxers and are more often non-cancerous.
Histology results showed that Kari's had aggressive cancer cells within it. The likelihood being that Kari has further cancer within.
We discussed those options in length with our vet... for perspective Kari is a 7 year old bouncing boxer, who is nicknamed Karen due to personality traits : ) she has also hit middle age... which for her means an extra gram of food on her lips is about 10 on her hips! Keeping the right weight balance for her and not compromising her joints is a constant battle.
With our vet not being convinced of the benefits of chemotherapy for her - the decision was made to opt out of chemo. We went on to review the side effects of steroids, the positives and negatives of this treatment long term on Kari.
The residing outcome for us was to look for alternative treatments for Kari. We wanted an outcome that would ensure the balance of her life would be the best it could be. Which is when we stumbled on some research around the benefits of CBD oil.
Kari has been on CBD oil since December, her overall health and wellbeing is excellent, she is even being cheeky and jumping over things she hasn't tackled in 3 years.
Does CBD oil work? For us it was about finding a treatment protocol that didn't inhibit Kari and her personality, right now Kari is well, strong and happy - so for us, yes it does.
Other uses of CBD oil - We had a pup home to stay who was particularly anxious with a routine change, we used some of the CBD oil to see if it would help her settle - which it seemed to do successfully. Would she have settled naturally, I am sure she would! but to her owner she seemed less edgy and a lot calmer than expected.
In summary - I'm of the opinion that you should not expect miracles with any treatment protocol, the more significant the outcome you are after seems to have more aggressive side effects and for us CBD was about trying to keep a balance in Kari's quality of life.
