How Much Raw Food Should I Feed My Dog?

The table above is a starting guide rather than a fixed rule.

Many healthy adult dogs do well starting around 2–3% of their ideal body weight each day.

You may need to adjust this depending on your dog's:

  • age
  • activity level
  • metabolism
  • ideal body weight and current body condition
  • whether they are desexed
  • lifestyle and exercise
  • individual nutritional needs

Keep an eye on your dog's body condition and adjust their daily amount as required.

Should I Use My Dog's Current or Ideal Weight?

Where a dog is already at a healthy body condition, their current weight provides a useful starting point.

If your dog is significantly overweight or underweight, feeding calculations based solely on their current weight may not be appropriate. Their ideal body weight and individual needs should be considered instead.

What About Puppies?

Puppies have different nutritional and energy requirements from adult dogs, so the standard adult 2–3% calculation shouldn't simply be applied to a growing puppy.

Growth rate, expected adult size, age and the nutritional balance of the diet all matter.

For puppies, we recommend following an appropriate puppy feeding plan rather than relying solely on an adult body-weight calculator.

Active and Working Dogs

Highly active, working and sporting dogs may require more food and energy than a less active dog of the same weight.

Rather than simply increasing food indefinitely, consider the dog's overall energy requirements, body condition and the energy density of their diet.
